Ottawa, CanadaNeptec Design Group, has received the George M. Low Award, NASA's premier honor for quality and performance. This recognition marks the first time a non-U.S. company receives this award.

Neptec received the award in the small business product category for the development of
machine vision products that operate in hostile space environments in support of the Space Shuttle Program at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston. The company is one of this year’s four recipients of the Low award, which recognizes businesses that share a commitment to teamwork, technical and managerial excellence, safety, and customer service.

“I want to congratulate Neptec on their outstanding performance over the past few years and also congratulations on winning the George M. Low Award – Congratulations,” said John Shannon, Space Shuttle Program Manager. “Neptec has been a great partner with NASA and the Space Shuttle Program. We count on Neptec and their Engineers to helps us bring home the vehicle safely each flight.”

Neptec, a NASA prime contractor since 1995, has delivered space-certified flight machine vision systems on three different NASA programs and has supported more than 40 Space Shuttle missions with more than 30,000 hours logged in Mission Control. While the company has achieved multiple awards in this capacity, as well as the highest possible annual contractor performance rating three years in a row, Neptec president Iain Christie was humbled after receiving NASA’s highest recognition.

“We are honoured to receive the George M. Low Award from NASA” said Christie. “It is a recognition not only of the value of our technology and talent and creativity of our people, but also a recognition of their unwavering commitment to quality, to their attention to detail and to their commitment to working in partnership with our customers to solve really tough problems when it really counts. ”
The award was established in 1985 as NASA's Excellence Award for Quality and Productivity before being renamed in 1990 in memory of George M. Low, NASA's deputy administrator from 1969 to 1976 and a leader in the early development of space programs. The Low award has been used by NASA to promote excellence and continual improvement by challenging its contractor community to be a global benchmark of quality management practices. The 2010 Low awards were presented on February 10, 2011 at NASA's eighth annual Project Management Challenge in Long Beach, CA.

“Neptec is a prime example of a Canadian space success story,” said Dr. Steve MacLean, President of the Canadian Space Agency. “The Canadian Space Agency is very proud to see Neptec being recognized as a driving force of innovation, both in Canada and internationally. This recognition is even more important to Canada as Neptec is the first non-U.S. company to receive this prestigious award from NASA. It truly shows the value Canada offers to the international space program.”
