Novel optical-coding system wins packaging award
A product coding system that uses a conventional light source and a spatial light modulator (SLM) has won the Packaging Innovator Award at the International Packaging Exhibition (Birmingham, England). The CRL (Hayes, England) Intellident system uses PC-based graphics software, a light source, and a ferroelectric liquid-crystal-display SLM. The item being coded is precoated with a patch of transparent, light-sensitive ink. A display image is projected onto the patch and becomes opaque in the exposed areas. By changing the LCD image, a stream of items can be quickly coded.
