PerkinElmer's sensors are quite green, says report

Nov. 12, 2008
According to a recent independent report, the use of sensors made by PerkinElmer Optoelectronics (Waltham, MA) is helping to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 22 million metric tons per year.

According to a recent independent report, the use of sensors made by PerkinElmer Optoelectronics (Fremont, CA) is helping to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 22 million metric tons per year. That is approximately the quantity of CO2 released by two medium-sized coal-fired power stations in Europe. Use of PerkinElmer's sensors will be contributing to energy savings of over 35,000 gigawatt-hours in 2008 alone, according to data from the report, which was prepared by ERA Technology (Surrey, England).

These study findings help support a new company alignment strategy for PerkinElmer, which on November 10 announced its new goal of defining itself in terms of how its technologies improve the health and safety of people and their environment.

"PerkinElmer was always a difficult company to explain," said Robert Friel, who was named CEO this year. "Now we are going to explain very simply what it doesimprove the health and safety of people and the environment."

PerkinElmer's sensors enable motion-controlled energy conservation applications including air conditioning, dawn to dusk lighting, proximity/security lighting, printer/copiers, microwave ovens, and automotive climate control.

electronica 2008

At electronica 2008 (November 11 to 14; Munich, Germany), PerkinElmer will display its technologies for energy conservation, safety and security, and human health (Hall A2, Stand 107).

"It is particularly gratifying to be able to demonstrate how our core technology expertise in silicon and infrared detection, specialty lighting solutions such as our eco-friendly LEDs, and digital X-ray detection for medical and industrial imaging are creating better outcomes for our global customers and partners," said John Roush, president of PerkinElmer Optoelectronics.

PerkinElmer's electronica exhibition comes on the heels of the company's announcement of a significant strategic alignment of its businesses into two divisions, Human Health and Environmental Health, scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2009.
