Auburn, MA--Physik Instrumente USA has hired William Culpi as engineering chief of PI miCos USA Products.

Auburn, MA--Motion-control and positioning equipment manufacturer Physik Instrumente USA extends its support for the PI miCos precision positioning product lines by hiring William Culpi as engineering chief of PI miCos USA Products. Culpi will be working on custom designs and on the integration of complex precision positioning systems for OEMs and research customers among other responsibilities.

Before joining Physik Instrumente, Culpi, who holds several US patents, was VP of engineering at MICOS USA where he developed a line of piezo positioning systems. Prior to MICOS USA, he worked at Newport Corporation in a variety of engineering and management positions. William developed and co-developed a number of highly successful motion control and instrumentation products. His multi-disciplinary background and innovative approach have resulted in many outstanding solutions for leading equipment manufacturers in the semiconductor, flat panel, medical, optical instrumentation and various other markets. Prior to Newport, William worked at Excellon Automation/Excellon Photonics where he developed laser-imaging systems for the PCB manufacturing industry.

Culpi grew up in Romania where he received his Master degree in electro-mechanical engineering. He graduated magna cum laude with his thesis receiving second place at a national research conference and being published in IEEE-Transactions.

PI miCos--a Physik Instrumente subsidiary--provides motion-control systems for OEMs and research. PI miCos linear translation stages are currently focusing laser beams (http://www.laserfocusworld.com/articles/2012/08/pi-micos-mars-rover.html) in a spectrometer on the Mars Rover’s science lab.

PI manufactures motion-control equipment, piezo systems, and piezo motors and actuators for semiconductor applications, photonics, bio-nano-technology and medical engineering. PI has been developing and manufacturing standard & custom precision products with piezoceramic and electromagnetic drives for 4 decades and has been ISO 9001 certified since 1994. PI has 10 subsidiaries, R&D / engineering on 3 continents, and total staff of 700+.
