The United States Display Consortium (San Jose, CA) has awarded a $1.65 million contract to Elsicon Inc. (Wilmington, DE) for the development of technology, materials, and tools to create a liquid-crystal alignment layer by means other than mechanical rubbing. The technology would meet special application needs to improve process control on pretilt angles, eliminate cleaning, and reduce cost of ownership. Elsicon will contribute an equal amount to the development effort by setting u¥a facility to develo¥and evaluate alignment layer materials and to define the process conditions by which alignment can be produced and controlled by exposure to ultraviolet light; the company will establish a partnershi¥with an equipment manufacturer to implement the alignment layer process.
