2021 Frontiers in Optics and Laser Science conference to go virtual

Aug. 19, 2021
The new format for the 2021 Frontiers in Optics + Laser Science (FiO+LS) conference allows for a more inclusive and safe experience for all attendees.

The 2021 Frontiers in Optics + Laser Science (FiO+LS) conference, presented by the American Physical Society’s Division of Laser Science (DLS; College Park, MD) and The Optical Society (OSA; Washington, DC), will transition to a virtual (online-only) format and take place October 31 – November 4, 2021. The new format allows for a more inclusive and safe experience for all attendees.

This year’s FiO+LS technical program and exhibition will feature three conference themes: Autonomous Systems, Machine Learning and Virtual Reality, and Augmented Vision. It will also feature invited speakers, special events, dynamic poster presentations, and two engaging plenary speakers.

In his talk titled “Fourier Transforms and Fourier Optics with Mathematica™,” Joseph Goodman, William Ayer Professor Emeritus at Stanford University (Stanford, CA), will describe the purpose and use of the Mathematica program. Goodman will cover his approach and lessons learned in utilizing Mathematica as a tool to teach both Fourier transforms and Mathematica simultaneously.

Anne L’Huillier, a professor at Lund University (Lund, Sweden), will explore the use of attosecond pulses in investigating fast electron dynamics in atomic photoionization. In her talk titled “From Extreme Nonlinear Optics to Ultrafast Atomic Physics,” L’Huillier is set to demonstrate the physics and performance of high-order harmonics or trains of attosecond pulses deriving from the interaction of atoms with intense laser radiation.

Plenary presentations will take place November 2-3.

Visionary speakers include Paul Debevec, Director of Research, Creative Algorithms and Technology at Netflix (Los Gatos, CA); Keith Nelson, Haslam and Dewey Professor of Chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT; Cambridge, MA); Ana Maria Rey, NIST and JILA Fellow and an associate research professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder; Eli Yablonovitch, a professor at the University of California Berkeley; and Jiangying Zhou, Program Manager at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA; Arlington, VA).

FiO/LS registration is now open as of August 18, 2021.
