March 7, 2005, San Jose, CA--Bookham has non-exclusively licensed a portfolio of patents on silicon photonics to California-based Kotura, a manufacturer of silicon photonic components. The technology covered by the patents relates to the design and manufacturing of silicon waveguide devices such as variable optical attenuators and modulators and to the construction of multi-functional optical silicon chips. Bookham exited silicon photonics in 2003.

"Bookham originated many of the early patents in the silicon photonics space," said Haydn Jones, director of IP for Bookham. "We recognize that silicon technology continues to have great potential and feel that the timing is right for us to license our patents."

"Silicon photonics is emerging as an important technology with broad applications," said Jean-Louis Malinge, CEO of Kotura. "Kotura has a world-class design team and many patents of our own. Together with the new portfolio of patents from Bookham, we have created a strong base of IP to support our future growth."
