Luxtera Inc. announces first 10-Gbit/s CMOS photonics

Luxtera Inc., a fabless semiconductor company and developer of silicon photonics, announced that it has solved the longstanding problem of building advanced photonic interfaces into mass-produced silicon chips.

Carlsbad, CA--Luxtera Inc., a fabless semiconductor company and developer of silicon photonics, announced that it has solved the longstanding problem of building advanced photonic interfaces into mass-produced silicon chips.

The company claims that it is now possible to integrate high-speed optical fiber interfaces in silicon devices produced in an industry-standard CMOS fabrication process. This capability will give computer and communication OEMs the performance benefits of optical-fiber communications, delivered with the economics of silicon.

In the devices, waveguides are fabricated on a silicon-on insulator wafer that also holds electronics. Luxtera says its CMOS photonics technology delivers the 10-Gbit/s optical modulation required for practical high-speed optical-fiber communication. Luxtera chips are built in the same CMOS process that Luxtera's development partner, Freescale Semiconductor (Austin, TX), uses for mass production of their leading-edge microprocessors. True integration of 10-Gbit/s photonics into regular silicon processes is significant for both the semiconductor and optics industries, because integration of optical interfaces into VLSI chips would dramatically reduce the cost of high-speed links.
