Acousto-optic tunable filters improve optical microscopy

Jan. 1, 2002
The acousto-optic tunable filter is playing an increasingly important role in modern optical microscopy. In the latest-generation laser-scanning confocal microscopes, these devices modulate both the wavelength and amplitude of the laser light used as the illumination beam.
Used with a laser-scanning confocal microscope, an acousto-optic tunable filter selects wavelengths and specific field regions for illumination.
