SPIE launches Journal of Photonics for Energy

SPIE will begin publication of the Journal of Photonics for Energy (JPE), a new peer-reviewed electronic journal, this fall.

Bellingham, WA--SPIE has announced its plans to begin publication this fall of the Journal of Photonics for Energy (JPE), a new peer-reviewed electronic journal. JPE will cover fundamental and applied research areas focused on the application of photonics for energy harvesting, conversion, storage, distribution, monitoring, consumption, and efficient usage.

Zakya Kafafi, Director of the Division of Materials Research of the National Science Foundation (NSF), is editor-in-chief of the new journal. She will be joined by a distinguished editorial board with members from around the world who have defined a unique scope that will make JPE a valuable resource for researchers, policy-makers, industry, and students.

Many interest areas
Areas of special interest for JPE include novel photonic materials and innovative concepts for renewable energy, photonic devices for efficient harvesting, conversion, and storage of solar energy, solar thermal and concentrator technology, energy efficient photonic devices, and photonic technologies for monitoring energy usage and/or exhaust gases in places such as power plants and buildings.

"Photonics encompasses important applications for all aspects of energy production and conservation," said SPIE president Ralph James. "Recognizing the need for a cohesive source for publications focused on photonics for energy applications, SPIE is pleased to provide an innovative electronic journal that will share research results with the international community to help advance solutions to the world's needs for energy production, storage, transmission, efficiency, and clean technology."

Free for the first year
"Each year SPIE sponsors many technical conferences that include these important topics," said SPIE Publications Director Eric Pepper. "We will support science and technology in these areas through this new peer-reviewed journal option for authors and resource for researchers and organizations interested in this important subject. In the first year, the contents of the Journal of Photonics for Energy will be freely available to all readers."

The new journal will be published electronically in the SPIE Digital Library. JPE authors may take advantage of capabilities of the SPIE Digital Library such as multimedia and extensive linking to other web-based content. Information about the journal along with submission information for authors is available at SPIE.org/jpe.

He obtained a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering and physics at Rutgers University and a master's in optical engineering at the University of Rochester.
