Seoul, South Korea--Samsung Electronics has developed two integrated LED flash packages for its mobile devices; the packages include a white-light LED flash and a free-form optical reflector whose surface is also partially diffusing.

One package is 1.4 mm thick and is intended for tablets and smartphones thinner than 7 mm; the other delivers at least 165 lux at a current of 1 A and will appear in the Galaxy 5 smartphone which will be introduced later this month (February 2014).

The new LED packages (along with other Samsung LED flash packages that do not include optics) will be showcased at the Mobile World Congress (Feb. 24-27, 2014; Barcelona, Spain).

The reflector-integrated flash LEDs deliver a minimum color rendering index (CRI) of 80 -- a number that, while not spectacular if meant for LEDs used in general illumination, is perfectly adequate for cell-phone flash.
