Ultrafast single-mode VCSEL from VI Systems for datacom applications

July 25, 2011
The V30-850C1SM ultrafast single-mode vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) features up to 2 mW optical output power at ~7 mW power consumption, with operating voltage

The V30-850C1SM ultrafast single-mode vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) features up to 2 mW optical output power at ~7 mW power consumption, with operating voltage <3 V. It eliminates the impact of chromatic dispersion of glass fiber at 850 nm, yielding optical data transmission of up to 35 Gbit/s for next-generation datacom applications. The VCSEL comes available in a 250 × 250 µm single die size or as a chip array. VI Systems

PRESS RELEASE

VI Systems launches ultra-fast single mode VCSEL for datacom application

VI Systems will presents single mode 850 nm VCSELs (vertical surface emitting lasers) for extended-reach datacom applications during the Photonics West exhibition in San Francisco, CA from 25-27, 2011. The new generation of semiconductor laser is introduced as the world fastest single mode laser at 850 nm wavelength with very low power consumption.

BERLIN, Germany, Jan 21, 2010

VI Systems GmbH (VIS), a leader in optical engines and components introduces the V30-850C1SM high-frequency VCSEL (vertical surface emitting laser) for datacom applications. The device features up to 2 mW optical output power at about 7 mW power consumption. The operating voltage is less than 3V.

Single mode VCSELs allow to extend the reach over multimode fiber by eliminating the impact of chromatic dispersion of glass fiber at 850 nm wavelength which is particularly important for ultrahigh transmission bit rates for next generation datacom applications.

Optical data transmission of up to 35 GBit/s has been realized with high speed photo detectors and transimpendance amplifiers from VI Systems. The V30-850C1SM chip is available in a 250 x 250 um single die size or as chip array.

Target applications are 14 GBit/s Fiber Channel, Infiniband FDR (14 GBit/s) and EDR (26 GBit/s) applications. It has been demonstrated previously that the use of single mode 850 nm VCSEL enables 15.6 GBit/s transmission over 1 km of 50-µm core multimode fiber.

Product samples are available now.

Visit VI Systems at the Photonics West exhibition in San Francisco, CA from Jan 25-27, 2011 I booth # 5217.
