Nashua, NH, December 17, 2003. The laser industry experienced a 15% revenue increase in 2003 over 2002 to reach $4.9 billion, according to the latest Laser Focus World marketplace survey. The factors fueling this and other trends in the laser and optoelectronics market will be discussed in detail at the annual Laser Focus World Marketplace Seminar, to be held January 26, 2004, in San Jose, CA during Photonics West.
"Our survey numbers indicate that, despite ongoing selected market and ASP contractions, a turnaround may be in the works," said Stephen Anderson, editor-in-chief of of Laser Focus World, who will give the marketplace presentation at the seminar. "For the first time in three years, overall laser industry revenues increased, up 13% in 2003 over 2002 despite a 3% decline in sales of non-diode lasers."
Other highlights of the day-long event include a keynote presentation by Wayne Knox on "The New Era of Ultrafast Manufacturing"; a discussion of emerging opportunities for laser- and LED-based bioinstrumentation in genomics, proteomics, and drug discovery (Michael Tice, Strategic Directions International); a look at the future of fiber lasers in industrial applications (Stuart Woods, Southampton Photonics); semiconductor laser market review and forecast (Robert Steele, Strategies Unlimited); industrial laser markets and applications (David Belforte, Industrial Laser Solutions), and the high-power diode-laser market (Merrill Apter, Coherent). Attendees will also receive a CD-ROM containing market data compiled from the annual Laser Focus World market survey; this information will not be made available in the magazine or through any other resource.
