Gottingen, Germany, April 29, 2002 -- Lambda Physik AG, a supplier of pulsed UV lasers, has obtained an order amounting to approximately EUR 4 million for the newest generation of its ultrashort wavelength 157nm lasers. The order which has been placed by a leading stepper and scanner manufacturer is one of the largest contracts in this newly developing market for 157nm tools.

There are signs of a distinct future growth potential for the application of this shortest wavelength of excimer lasers in lithography. However, this segment is still in the initial stages of development. The award of this contract to Lambda Physik all the more underscores the technological strength of the Gottingen-based company.

With research and development expenditures amounting to 17 percent of sales, Lambda Physik is one of the technology leaders in innovative lasers. The large number of product launches substantiates Lambda Physik's innovative strength. Approximately 50 percent of sales are generated with products that were introduced in the last two years.

In the current phase of market weakness, the award of this order for EUR 4 million has to be considered a special success for Lambda Physik. Lambda Physik's President and CEO Dr. Dirk Basting commented on the order as follows: "The 157nm technology will be a driving force for growth in the laser market in the future. This was evident from the great interest in this technology shown by the industry at the 4th international Lambda Physik 157nm/EUV symposium in Fort Lauderdale in early April."
