San Jose, CA, September 10, 2002 -- iolon, Inc., a supplier of tunable optical devices, has signed a sourcing agreement with Lucent Technologies for iolon's Apollo line of high power, widely tunable external cavity lasers.

Under the agreement, Lucent will deploy iolon's tunable lasers in LambdaXtreme Transport, an industry-leading dense wave division multiplexing (DWDM) optical networking system. Utilizing the wideband tuning ability of the Apollo series, Lucent, through LambdaXtreme, has plans to offer a 16-channel tunable system this fall, one of the broadest tuning offerings in the industry.

The Apollo laser will enable LambdaXtreme to cover the entire spectrum with 8 tunable Optical Transponder Units (OTUs) in lieu of 128 "fixed" OTUs. Its future use could enable cost-effective, dynamic applications for next-generation transparent networks, such as fast provisioning and bandwidth on demand.

"LambdaXtreme Transport was designed to meet service providers' distance and capacity needs, while enabling a dynamic, flexible and transparent network architecture. Our partnership with iolon helps us to achieve this," said Frank Galuppo, General Manager and Vice President, Optical Long Haul Solutions, Lucent Technologies. "By integrating iolon's tunable lasers, we can now help dramatically lower the total costs of operating transport networks for our customers."

With output power greater than 20mW and tuning over 100 channels at 50 GHz and 200 channels at 25 GHz channel spacing, iolon's tunable laser products deliver the highest level of optical performance and tunability in the industry, enabling system vendors to deliver dramatically increased levels of capacity utilization and flexibility.

Headquartered in San Jose, California, iolon delivers high performance, tunable optical devices for intelligent optical networks. The company has introduced the award-winning ApolloTM line of high-powered, widely tunable lasers available in 10mW and 20mW output power in both the C- and L-Bands.

iolon's Apollo lasers provide industry-leading performance, reliability and flexibility, powering intelligent optical networks. Based on patented MEMS (micro electro mechanical systems), micro-optics and advanced servo control technologies, iolon's platform technology is extensible to future tunable product lines, including tunable filters, optical switches, polarization controllers and universal transponders.
