JDSU partners with Amada to introduce turnkey kilowatt lasers to be seen at SPIE Photonics West 2015

JDSU intruduces 2, 4, and 6 kW fiber-laser systems and 2 and 4 kW direct-diode laser systems.

JDSU (Milpitas, CA; NASDAQ: JDSU) is introducing five new turnkey fiber-laser and direct-diode laser systems for use by machine-tool manufacturers for macromaterials-processing applications. The new products were designed by cutting-machine manufacturer Amada (Buena Park, CA), a JDSU collaborative partner. The new systems are built around JDSU's fiber-laser and direct-diode laser engines. Products will be available the second half of calendar year 2015.

The new lasers are on display at the 2015 SPIE Photonics West exhibition (San Francisco, CA, February 10-12, 2015) at JDSU's booth #1431.

JDSU will be showing the CORELIGHT AJ 2, 4, and 6 kW fiber-laser systems for high-speed sheet-metal cutting, precision welding, and other macromaterials-processing applications, and in addition the CORELIGHT ExC 2 and 4 kW direct-diode laser systems for high-speed thick sheet metal cutting, welding, and surface-treatment applications.

According to industry analyst firm Strategies Unlimited (Mountain View, CA), a PennWell Corp. company, direct-diode lasers are replacing traditional carbon dioxide (CO2) lasers for metal processing and are projected to represent $237 million in 2017, growing at a CAGR of 15.3% from 2012 to 2017. Strategies Unlimited also reports that the benefits of kilowatt fiber lasers over CO2 are driving projected revenue of $780 million in 2017, growing at a CAGR of 17.5% from 2012 to 2017.

JDSU and Amada have been collaborating for more than seven years, says Alan Lowe, president of the CommTest, Communications and Commercial Optical Products (CCOP) business segment at JDSU.
