High-brightness light-emitting diodes account for about 5% of the market for illumination applications and many customers tend to focus more on the mood or ambience that can be created than on technical advantages, according to the first two articles in this issue of Optoelectronics World devoted to solid-state lighting. The LED illumination market share is also growing rapidly as technology initiatives are undertaken to enable new applications, according to our third article, with perhaps the best mood news of all being that a one-year acceleration of the displacement of traditional lighting by solid-state lighting could save U.S. consumers roughly $35 billion.
