David A. Belforte, editor of Industrial Laser Review (a PennWell publication), will receive this year`s Arthur L. Schawlow award at the 14th International Congress on Applications of Lasers and Electro-Optics (ICALEO `95) to be held in San Diego, CA, in November. Belforte directed the first studies using high-power lasers in transformation hardening, cladding, alloying, and rapid solidification processes. He also introduced laser sheet-metal cutting in the USA six years before the first commercial product was sold. The award is given annually to commemorate the work done by Nobel Prize winner Schawlow, who, along with colleague Charles Townes, formulated a mathematical equation proving lasers would work.
