Laser-safety classification device

June 1, 1998
A measurement instrument based on a subnotebook PC card can be used to quickly determine the safety class of lasers and LEDs per FDA and IEC 60825 regulations. By law, lasers must be class ified with respect to safety as a function of output power in a defined aperture. In Europe, LEDs are included in similar regulations. The instrument runs on a 1.8-lb subnotebook PC running Windows 95. The instrument measures both the laser-safety class and the spatial distribution of light in the beam.
