Expanding cutting and welding optics capabilities, LBP Optics acquires SMT

Sept. 9, 2019
The purchase will augment LBP Optics' manufacturing capabilities and product range, which have uses in carbon-dioxide and fiber laser cutting and welding systems.

Optics maker LBP Optics (Biggleswade, England) has acquired Symons Mirror Technology (SMT; Stevenage, England), a diamond machining company that manufactures optical and high-precision mechanical components. The purchase will augment LBP Optics' manufacturing capabilities and product range, which have uses in carbon-dioxide (CO2) and fiber laser cutting and welding systems.

In combination with optical engineers at ULO Optics (LBP Optics' parent company) and LBP Optics, SMT will offer design and manufacturing capabilities at the same facility. This will enable the company to work closely with customers to overcome problems and adapt to the specific requirements of each project. LBP Optics can manufacture components with extremely demanding specifications and complex shapes such as polygons, axicons, infrared domes, aspheric, ellipsoids, off-axis parabolic mirrors, Fresnel optics, and toroids.

LBP Optics designs and manufactures a range of chemically polished metal mirrors that are used in many applications aside from CO2 and fiber laser cutting and welding, including military and defense applications, medical and dental lasers, gas sensing, and spectroscopy.
