GKN Powder Metallurgy opens additive manufacturing customer center

The 38,260-sq-ft. facility expands the company's global additive manufacturing network and extends its scope of in-house powder metallurgy capabilities.

GKN Powder Metallurgy (Radevormwald, Germany) has opened its North American powder metallurgy headquarters and additive manufacturing customer center in Auburn Hills, MI. The 38,260-sq-ft. facility expands the company's global additive manufacturing (also known as 3D printing) network and extends its scope of in-house powder metallurgy capabilities.

The building, which houses over 80 employees from the three GKN Powder Metallurgy businesses (Hoeganaes, GKN Sinter Metals, and GKN Additive), includes 20,700 sq. ft. of collaborative working areas and 17,700 sq. ft. of shop floor space.

The building also includes a 3200-sq-ft. additive manufacturing customer center equipped with two EOS M290 direct metal laser sintering (DMLS) printers. The DMLS machines incorporate powder-bed fusion technology, creating functional prototypes within a two-week lead time and allowing customers to test factors such as usability, ergonomics, manufacturability, and materials in the early stages of the development process.

The metro-Detroit location expands the company's global 3D printing network, providing customers with efficient lead times and local customer support. The building offers room for growth, and the company stays committed to global development in metal additive manufacturing for prototypes, medium series, and aftermarket.
