Seeking to develop gas-flow solutions for additive manufacturing, TNSC partners with Sintavia

Feb. 2, 2018
The two companies will develop and promote metal additive manufacturing solutions across key industries.

Industrial gases and welding solutions provider Taiyo Nippon Sanso Corporation (TNSC; Tokyo, Japan) and metal additive manufacturer Sintavia (Davie, FL) have formed a partnership to develop and promote metal additive manufacturing solutions across key industries. The partnership involves a technical collaboration to develop and commercialize gas flow processes that optimize the many benefits of metal additive manufacturing. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, and TNSC includes co-investment in Sintavia.

TNSC will apply its experience in gas quality control and gas flow experience to the growing world of additive manufacturing, according to Tadaharu Watanabe, TNSC's general manager of global business development. The partnership extends the company's overall strategy in the additive manufacturing market by investing and partnering with laser metal deposition tool and metal powder suppliers, he adds.

Gas flow dynamics are the most important, and most overlooked, aspect of successful quality additive manufacturing builds, says Brian R. Neff, Sintavia's chairman and CEO. The two companies will jointly develop and market gas flow solutions that will benefit their mutual customers.

The optimization of industrial gas for additive manufacturing involves perfecting the chemistry, mix, and flow within the build chamber of each manufacturing run. Poorly flowed or poorly mixed gas can result in builds that lack proper mechanical properties, have unacceptable porosity, or a general lack of fusion. It is expected that the newly announced partnership will work with existing customers to promote optimized gas flow strategies that allow for successful end-use builds.
