Blackbird Robotics appoints new CEO

Sept. 25, 2017
The company has appointed Karl Christian Messer as CEO, succeeding co-founder and current CEO Wolfgang Vogl.

Remote laser welding system company Blackbird Robotics (Garching, Germany) is transforming into a solid, mid-size Scanlab Group (Puchheim, Germany) enterprise whose growth trajectory can be successfully pursued even independent of its founders. The company has appointed Karl Christian Messer as CEO, succeeding co-founder and current CEO Dr. Wolfgang Vogl, who will exit the company at the end of 2017 to establish a startup in the Industrial Internet of Things (IoT) environment.

Karl Christian Messer

During the course of his career, Messer served at KUKA, PTR Präzisionstechnik, and Linde in various sales management, production management, and controlling capacities, as well as CEO at mid-size companies. He studied mechanical engineering at Munich Technical University and also has certifications as a technical business economist, safety engineer, and European welding engineer.

Blackbird's robot-assisted laser welding systems feature internally developed control technology and user software combined with Scanlab scan systems for several industrial applications, including automotive. In June 2017, the company introduced a laser welding system with optical coherence tomography (OCT) technology for integrated seam tracking and process monitoring.
