In the past few weeks, German car manufacturers and automotive suppliers have ordered several Jenoptik (Jena, Germany) laser systems with a combined value of approximately €10 million (over $1.1 million). The laser machines are used, for example, for contour trimming of structural components, especially for next-generation electric cars. These components are used to implement new car body platforms, which are necessary to protect battery units and to comply with carbon dioxide (CO2) targets.

The machines and the processes were first comprehensively tested by customers in the Jenoptik application center. The lasers have proven to be flexible and fast high-quality tools, especially for new lightweight materials such as aluminum die casting, as well as for ultra-high strength steel.

The JENOPTIK-VOTAN BIM laser systems enable highly efficient machining of complex metal and plastic parts. The company has continuously developed the unique system concept, in which the laser beam is guided inside the robotic arm. Based on this technology, the latest system generation has several 3D laser processing robots operating in parallel. This system technology provides clear productivity advantages for customers with a minimum installation area as well as high flexibility through to complete integration of the systems into the specific local production process.

Jenoptik's Automotive division manufactures production 3D laser systems that are integrated into customer production lines as part of process optimization and automation, and machines plastics, metals, and leather.
