The 2008 Lasers & Photonics Marketplace Seminar, to be held on January 21 in conjunction with SPIE's Photonics West conference, will feature an Ultrafast Technology Forum to explore the unique characteristics of ultrafast pulses that promise advances in "real world" applications ranging from the industrial and communications arenas to medicine.

Despite successes, however, moving ultrafast technology into the mainstream has been a continuing challenge. While undoubtedly offering new and exciting ways to ablate tissue or manipulate metal, these lasers are both complex and expensive relative to existing alternatives. Nonetheless, recent developments seem likely to move the technology forward at an increasing rate.

The Ultrafast Technology Forum brings together a number of industry experts to discuss some of these recent advances and to highlight some of the opportunities in materials processing, the life sciences, and elsewhere. Speakers include Scott Davison, president of Raydiance; Andreas Tuennermann from the Fraunhofer Institute, Institute of Applied Physics FhG-IOF; and Dennis Matthews, program leader, Medical Technology Center for Biophotonics Science and Technology at UC Davis.

The seminar is co-sponsored by Industrial Laser Solutions, Laser Focus World, and Strategies Unlimited. For more information, visit www.marketplaceseminar.com
