Laser assisted manufacturing featured at SALA

East Hartford, CT – The controllability factor of laser processing is a feature that attracts process developers. This is one of the reasons that laser additive manufacturing (LAM) is currently a hot topic, especially laser cladding, which is a significant subset of LAM applications.

East Hartford, CT – The controllability factor of laser processing is a feature that attracts process developers. This is one of the reasons that laser additive manufacturing (LAM) is currently a hot topic, especially laser cladding which is a significant subset of LAM applications.

One of the key presentations at SALA 2010 this year is by Pat Bergan from the Navy Underwater Warfare Center (NUWC) in Keyport, WA. Mr. Bergan has been instrumental in the development and implementation of laser processes for a number of Navy programs. This includes laser clad repair for aluminum torpedo components which will be the focus of his presentation. The presentation will take a historical look at how and why NUWC got into laser processing and its benefits.

Also presenting is Dr. Khershed Cooper, of the U. S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) and the Office of Naval Research (ONR), who has been involved in laser materials processing for over twenty years. He will describe ONR’s Manufacturing Science Program and other Programs which he manages, including laser additive manufacturing.

These two presentations are just a sampling of the excellent program being presented at the 5th Symposium on Advanced Laser Applications (SALA) scheduled for April 14-15. Now is the time to register as attendance at this technical conference and trade show is limited. You can register online at www.ccat.us/sala.
