Laser material processing in India

Adarshnagar, Hyderabad, India – Although many Indian IT companies are respected worldwide, some of the country's manufacturing companies lag behind in terms of technological innovation. However, India's Geometrix Laser Solutions (P) Ltd. is not one of them. It is among India’s first to launch the multikilowatt disc laser coupled with an articulated robot system.

Adarshnagar, Hyderabad, India – Many Indian IT companies are respected worldwide, however, manufacturing companies still lag behind in terms of technological innovation. The Indian economy is closely connected to the world economy, which influences the need for its manufacturing sector to become on a par with state-of-the-art manufacturing technologies. The talk about India’s booming economy and growth potential has been taking place for the last several years. However, India’s manufacturing sector, although growing at a rapid speed and primarily led by automotive sector, needs to innovate and invest in new technologies to contribute its share in Indian GDP.

In this climate, Geometrix Laser Solutions (P) Ltd. came of age as a startup company in 2006. It uses state-of-the-art laser technology for material processing in manufacturing industries. Geometrix has its headquarters in Hyderabad and a production plant at an industrial park in the Nellore district, which is approximately 65 km from the southern metropolis Chennai. The company reportedly has uniquely positioned technological adaptation supported by the several man-years of laser technology research of its work force. This gives Geometrix an advantage in niche technology such as industrial lasers.

The laser has the advantages of being a non-contact process and having fast processing speed. In India, usage of multi-kilowatt industrial laser is quite rare. Only a few established companies have adapted lasers on their manufacturing lines due to high initial capital investment for lasers. In such a climate, Geometrix began adapting laser technology and became a pioneer in the country.

The company is among India’s first to launch the multikilowatt disc laser coupled with an articulated robot system. Geometrix has a 2kW solid state disc laser coupled with a Kuka robotic system (see photo).

The 6D robotic system provides flexible beam delivery on the work piece through fiber cables. The laser head is supplied with crossjet gas flow for shielding gases. The laser head is also tailored for feeding powder during the laser cladding process. You can observe processing through the high speed scanning camera mounted on the laser head.

Geometrix has decades of man-year experience of laser material processing. It has strong tie up and technical support from leading research institutes globally. Currently, the company offers laser services in welding, cutting, cladding, hardening and other surface treatment processes. A wide variety of materials can be processed, such as low carbon steel, structural steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. Process capabilities include a thickness range of 0.5 mm to 5 mm for steel grades and up to 4 mm for aluminum.

Geometrix has an expansion plan to include new laser turnkey systems into its infrastructure to meet its growing customer demand.
