SPI Lasers announces initial orders won in two new market verticals

February 24--SPI Lasers annouced that it has won initial orders in plastics welding and medical aesthetics. Based on feedback from these customers, the company estimates that both opportunities combined could lead to sales between $1 million to $2 million over the next 12 to 18 months.

February 24--SPI Lasers, which designs, develops, engineers, and manufactures optical fiber-based lasers, annouced that it has won initial orders in plastics welding and medical aesthetics. Based on feedback from these customers, the company estimates that both opportunities combined could lead to sales between $1 million to $2 million over the next 12 to 18 months.

A key strategy for the company is to expand the breadth of applications into which its products are deployed.

In the micromachining sector, two companies have purchased SPI's lasers for the purpose of plastic welding, an application space historically served by either non-optical or traditional laser technologies. Lasers are increasingly being used in plastics welding to replace ultrasonic welding where sensitive electronic parts would be compromised by the ultrasonic process. SPI's optical fiber lasers, which reportedly offer high output power stability and manintenance-free welding in a small production floor footprint, will enable customers to produce rapid high-integrity welds for applications in electronics, medical devices, and automotive.

In the medical aesthetics arena, multiple orders have been received to conduct trials into the use of lasers for facial treatments.

Commenting on the orders won, David Parker chief executive of the company, said, "We have developed a laser which is a flexible tool for end users and integrators. These new market verticals further demonstrate this and build on the sales momentum in the medical device arena gained last year."
