New Mexico Tech gets laser from LANL
August 3--New Mexico Tech has received a $4.5 million laser from Los Alamos National Laboratory.
The specialized laser will enable Tech's Energetic Materials Research and Testing Center to cut and form materials with powerful, ultra-short pulsed of energy lasting only a few hundred femtoseconds.
The head of the research center's chemistry research and development laboratory, Christa Hockensmith, says the new capability will largely be used as a cutting and shaping workstation for experiments.
Los Alamos transferred the laser to the school under a redeployment arrangement.
