LASER 2009 World of PHOTONICS trade fair (June 15-18, 2009) will grow by more than 100,000 square feet despite the difficult worldwide economic environment. The additional area is necessary to accommodate more exhibitors, additional show features such as forums, and the growth of the LASER trade fair.
LASER will include a diverse program to foster the exchange of ideas and experiences between research and industry. The world's leading optical companies will present a wide range of products from individual components to systems. Forums, special shows, workshops and discussion sessions will provide up-to-date information on lasers and photonics industry topics, trends and developments.
LASER World of PHOTONICS and the World of Photonics Congress will focus on the following three key topics this year: biophotonics and life sciences, lasers in photovoltaics manufacturing, and illumination. The trade fair will present the key topics on joint stands, by individual exhibitors and in the accompanying program.
The World of Photonics Congress will present Application Panels, for the first time free of charge, at the forums in the exhibition halls. These Application Panels are an application-oriented series of lectures that bridge the gap between theory and practice. Themed "Lasers and photonics in actual practice" they will be divided into three areas:
•Biophotonics and life sciences with:
- Laser based photon and particle beams for medical applications
- Lasers for biophotonics
- Visions for future diagnostics
•Innovative lasers and light generation in science and industry with:
- Short-pulse lasers in commercial applications
- Novel developments in solid state laser technology
- Sustainable illumination concepts
- Optical components and materials for high-power-lasers
•Lasers and laser systems for production with:
- Lasers for photovoltaics
- Photovoltaics technologies utilizing lasers
- Rapid manufacturing
- Use of high-brilliance beam sources
The World of Photonics Congress (June 14 to 19), held concurrently with LASER, is the leading international conference for optical technologies. Over 3000 world delegates are expected to attend. The conference facilitates sharing technical information, particularly between academic research facilities and industrial users.
The World of Photonics Congress will hold seven conferences exploring topics including production of optical components and laser material processing, metrology and laser medicine. The Congress will also include Application Panels (mentioned previously) intended to bridge theory and practice. The Congress has been financially supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) since 2004.
On June 16, CEOs of leading international technology companies will participate in the CEO Roundtable panel discussion. They will explain their corporate strategies and take a look at the future of the industry.
Representatives from material processing and innovative production technologies will present "Photons in Production." This special show is primarily aimed at small and medium-sized companies and will feature the examples of the latest industry standards, live demonstrations and technical talks. "Photons in Production" is being jointly organized with the Institute for Machine Tools and Management Sciences (iwb) at Munich Technical University and the Bavarian Laser Center (blz) in Erlangen.
The Herbert Walther Award
The inaugural Herbert Walther Award will honor contributions from the fields of quantum optics, nuclear physics and leadership in the international scientific community. This award, presented in memory of Professor Herbert Walther, is endowed with ¬5,000 and will be presented for the first time this year. The award will be jointly presented by the Optical Society of America (OSA) and the German Physical Society (DPG).
Lichteinblicke
A large number of events entitled "Light Insights" will be held during the trade fair in order to arouse children's interest in optical technologies, present the technology from the aspect of financing and promote the projects within the framework of the European technology platform Photonics21.
