A-Laser, Milpitas, CA, a specialty laser cutting service for ablation of ultrathin metals and plastics, has expanded its laser cutting capacity with the purchase of a MicroLine 1120 P UV laser cutting system from LPKF Laser & Electronics.

"This new piece of equipment allows us to maintain that standard [of being able to produce high quality parts] while achieving the rapid turn time expected from our customer base," commented Josh Saunders, President of A-Laser. A-Laser offers UV laser cutting with virtually carbon-free laser cuts, 20 μm laser drilling, and 2 mil slot laser routing. The service is suitable for processing thin metal foils, thermoplastic (such as welding thermoplastics), and thermoset materials and material/adhesive combinations.

The MicroLine 1120 P -- which recently received an award at IPC APEX -- is designed for processing bare rigid and flexible PCB circuit boards, and is suited for high-mix flexible manufacturing environments, according to the company. It cuts, drills, engraves, and ablates a wide variety of materials with the tightest tolerances and has the ability to cleanly cut even the most complicated patterns with minimal stress to the substrate. This allows for more circuits on a single panel while an integrated vacuum table eliminates the limitations of tooling.
