Metal Spinners adds Laserdyne fiber laser system for aerospace component fabrication

Metal Spinners' specialty is fabricating, machining, and assembling high-temperature alloys and other difficult-to-machine/form alloys. Among its customers are many major engine manufacturers including General Electric, Honeywell, Rolls Royce, and Pratt and Whitney -- its laser certifications include GE S422, Allied Signal PNCP52525 & P6063, and NADCAP.

The company, which also is expanding its facility, says the new six-axis system will increase part production, and upgrade its technology with a fiber laser system and large work envelope, according to company president Dana Munick. The company already uses two other Laserdyne systems: a 7-axis 780 and 6-axis 795XS, both equipped with CO2 lasers.

"The LASERDYNE system equipped with a fiber laser represents the most advanced multi-axis laser processing technology for aerospace applications available," stated Terry L. VanderWert, president of Prima Power Laserdyne. "The addition of this system will enhance Metal Spinners’ existing production capability in terms of quality, efficiency and competitiveness in the marketplace. The combination of our proprietary software, laser process specific sensors, and precision machine tool design ensures that a laser system equipped with fiber laser is capable of maintaining and exceeding the quality requirements for the production of turbine engine components."

The Laserdyne 795XL system is capable of controlling six axes of motion with a 2m × 1m × 1m (80 in. × 40 in. × 40 in) work envelope. It includes Laserdyne's latest controller (S94P), and features the third-generation BeamDirector (BD3Y), with industry-leading volumetric precision and part access. By virtue of its compact and robust design, the system also provides unmatched access to parts for cutting (3D and 2D), drilling, and welding.
