SPI opens South Korean facilities, plans China expansion

Sept. 6, 2012
Fiber laser maker SPI Lasers is opening a new office and lab in Seoul and is planning a similar new office in China, to address the high-growth East Asia market for laser material processing.

Southampton, UK --SPI Lasers, a designer and manufacturer of fiber lasers, has expanded its Asian operations with a combined office and laboratory space in Seoul, Korea. The new site (#508, DMC Tower 1622, Sangam-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul) will provide sales and support services for SPI’s fiber lasers, as well as develop business opportunities in the region.

East Asia -- specifically China, Korea, and Taiwan -- is witnessing some of the highest growth rates in demand for laser material processing systems. The new office will focus on customer services, applications and marketing to better react to customers' demands for tools and support services.

SPI says John Chinn was recently hired as GM for South Korea and China, and Dae-Seung Moon as technical manager. Chinn previously held sales management positions in the Asia region for GSI Group, and prior to that spend a decade in sales and operations positions in the UK at Leica Microsystems and Precision Beam Technology.

"Fiber lasers are fast becoming more prevalent in marking, cutting, and welding," stated SPI CEO David Parker. "Asia is a significant market for the fiber laser industry and SPI are fully aware of its importance. Strengthening the team, facilities and presence in this region are all part of our Asia strategic development plan." SPI also indicated it is planning to open an new office in China.
