UK's City Engineering adds Trumpf fiber laser for processing metals

City Engineering, one of the UK's longest established family-run engineering companies (called "job shops" in the US), has purchased a new Trumpf TruLaser 5030 fiber laser to process a range of metals, from steel to aluminum and copper and brass.

The firm's new TruLaser 5030 fiber laser can process up to 3×1.5 m sheets of mild steel (15mm) and stainless steel (12mm), aluminum (12mm), copper (6mm) and brass (6mm). The system's lower power output also reduces running costs, and enables a lights-out operation that will save costs in operating shift work, explained Robert Davies, the firm's chairman.

The half-million-pound investment was made through a five-year funding deal with Lombard, one of the UK's largest asset finance providers. It's the firm's second such equipment investment arranged through Lombard, noted Davies, pointing out that using asset financing instead of cash enables greater flexibility and helps the firm preserve its capital. "The machinery will more than pay for itself during the contract period," he said. City Engineering also opted for a "key asset" policy that covers accidental damage for seven years in case of user error or damage to the machine.

City Engineering, established in 1946, employs 55 staff at its 35,000 sq. ft. operations in Bristol. The firm offers a complete engineering service from prototype to production batches, boasting many customers in the fields of semiconductor, defense, and oil/gas.
