Photonics Industries reduces tempered glass cutting takt time with picosecond lasers

March 18, 2014
The company will display its new variable-pulse-repetition-rate picosecond lasers at the 2014 Laser World of Photonics China expo this week.

Bohemia, NY - Global demand for mobile devices is driving the need to more efficiently cut tempered glasses. Photonics Industries' novel RGH Series picosecond (ps) lasers dramatically reduce the takt time to full cut tempered glass.

In the this video, a Photonics Industries RGH-1064-30 RGH ps laser full cuts 0.7 mmt glass tempered with a 40 micron DOL with small enough cracks (< 3 micron chip) and sufficient strength (150~200 MPa) to eliminate the post laser grinding/polishing step.

With glass cutting, the user desires to slow the rep rate down around the curved cut sections, but increase it during the straight cut sections. The advantage of the Photonics Industries’ RGH Series ps lasers is the ability to vary the pulse repetition rate (i.e., prf) "on the fly" while processing. Other picosecond laser manufacturers have fixed rep rates and the user cannot dynamically vary the rep rate.

Photonics Industries will be showing these ps lasers, as well as:

  • its new UV ns lasers that deliver up to 30 W at 355 nm of intra-cavity harmonic average power, and
  • its new DM100-527, the highest pulse energy YLF lasers available, producing up to 100 mJ in a single polarization from a single head configuration.
