East Hartford, Conn. – The Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology (CCAT) has secured a loan agreement with Winbro Group Technologies LLC, Rock Hill, S.C., covering the East Hartford installation of that company’s Delta laser system.

The Delta laser machine has been designed to accommodate large components up to 75 inches (1.9 m) in diameter and 1,100 lbs (500 kg) in weight. The Delta system can be configured to allow fitting of the most suitable laser for the application. The four laser types generally used are pulsed high peak power Nd:YAG; predominantly for metal drilling; disk or fiber laser for cutting, cladding and welding; and pulsed fiber lasers for ablation.

CCAT’s system will be equipped with a new GSI JK604D laser for drilling. This laser, the first of its kind in the US, is a single cavity design producing class leading beam quality. This system will also be equipped with a 100 W pulsed IPG Photonics fiber laser for the purpose of laser ablation in the production of shaped film cooling holes in turbine components. Both lasers will share the same beam delivery path.

The twin beam Delta laser system will be on display at CCAT’s East Hartford open house immediately following the last session of the SALA conference on April 14, 2011. Returning SALA attendees will note that this year's SALA 2011 is being held at the Hartford Hilton Hotel in downtown Hartford, a short drive from CCAT's Laser Laboratory. The open house is a very popular part of each year’s SALA event. In 2010, CCAT had a record attendance, which they anticipate will be surpassed as SALA attendees will be among the first to visit the expanded laser applications lab
