One World Trade Center spire and pinnacle laser cut by company using Trumpf laser

Kammetal used a TruLaser 1030 to fabricate top 40 feet of tallest building in the Western Hemisphere.

Farmington, CT - On May 10, the spire for One World Trade Center was permanently installed in New York City and with it, Trumpf Inc. customer Kammetal-Kusack Architectural Metal Inc. secured its place in history. Kammetal, an architectural and ornamental metal fabricator based in Brooklyn, NY, fabricated the top 40 feet of the spire and pinnacle of the new building. At 1,776 feet, the height pays tribute to the year the US declared its independence and establishes One World Trade Center as the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere.

The spire’s glass and stainless steel structure, which features a rotating beacon to illuminate the Manhattan skyline at night, was laser cut on a TruLaser 1030. Designed and built in the US, this machine serves as a cost effective and productive 2D laser cutting system in a small footprint. It is an energy-efficient solution for fabricators looking to offer 2D laser cutting while maintaining a low cost of operation.

Shortly after production for the spire began in October, Kammetal was flooded by Hurricane Sandy. The storm severely damaged its facility and fabricating equipment, including the TruLaser 1030. As the company recovered, Trumpf temporarily provided a new TruLaser 1030 to assist Kammetal in maintaining daily production. This allowed the company to finish fabrication for the One World Trade Center project while its damaged TruLaser 1030 was repaired at Trumpf Inc. headquarters.
