New Balance running shoes produced via 3D printing are set for debut
On April 15, 2016, New Balance (Lawrence, MA) will release for sale the first high-performance running shoes with a full-length, 3D-printed midsole.
In collaboration with 3D Systems (3DS; Rock Hill, SC), New Balance used 3DS' DuraForm TPU Elastomer laser sintering powder to make strides in the performance of printed parts for running shoes. The new midsoles leverage the benefits of 3D printing and breakthroughs in available materials to achieve an optimal balance of flexibility, strength, weight, and durability in an intricate honeycomb midsole structure.
3DS' selective laser sintering process converts the new powder material into solid cross-sections, layer by layer, using a laser.
