Ernest-Spencer Metals adds new laser equipment

June 30, 2016
Metal fabricator Ernest-Spencer Metals has added new equipment, including two laser systems, to improve its operation.

Ernest-Spencer Metals (ESM; Meriden, KS), a custom fabricator of sheet metal and structural steel, has added new equipment as it leverages advanced technologies to improve its operation. The company, which has also acquired Topeka Metal Specialties (Topeka, KS), serves a wide range of industries in the Midwest, including agriculture, food, construction, transportation energy, storage, and general industry.

The new equipment includes a TRUMPF 2030 4000W fiber laser system, a Hurco TMM12i 3-axis mill turn lathe, and a new automated blast system in its Ottawa, ON, Canada coating division. The new fiber laser handles sheets up to 5 × 10ft. The speed and the lower cost of operation/ownership for the fiber laser were keys in the decision to purchase it.

Founded in 1993, ESM has been designing and building grain elevators and feed mills throughout the region since the early 1920s. Fabricating metal parts for these facilities started in 1974.

Topeka Metals Specialties, a 52-year-old company, makes fabricated metal goods, specializing in custom cab manufacturing for vehicles and industrial equipment. Its name will be changed to EmestSpencer Metals, and it will continue making custom cabs as well as other fabricated parts and assemblies. It has a 145,000-sq-ft. facility in south Topeka.

Other fabricating equipment at ESM includes an Amada 4000W punch/laser system that features a 6 × 120in. work area and an automated laser cell with two 4000W lasers.
