Advanced manufacturing technology developer EWI (Columbus, OH) has purchased an electron beam melting system from Arcam AB (Mölndal, Sweden), which provides metal additive manufacturing solutions.
The Arcam A2X is an electron-beam powder bed fusion machine that additively manufactures large parts. This technology is capable of delivering a high volume of material quickly, so it has utility in creating parts for the aerospace and space exploration sectors. Its platform offers a 200 × 200 × 380mm build envelope.
The Arcam A2X system processes titanium alloys and materials that require elevated process temperatures, such as titanium aluminide and Inconel. The system can maintain a scan speed that allows melting at multiple points simultaneously. By sustaining a reduced atmosphere throughout the entire build cycle, the vacuum system prevents oxidation and contamination. These features can eliminate residual stress and ensure material properties with minimal post-processing.
In addition to production, the Arcam A2X has uses in research and process development for new materials. The company has an open material strategy to actively support customers working with their process development.
