VCSEL-based laser system for large-area wood surface treatment debuts

A VCSEL-based high-power laser system from Philips Photonics has use in industrial surface treatment of large areas.

Aachen, Germany - A vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL)-based high-power laser system from Philips Photonics has use in industrial surface treatment of large areas.

The IMALUX direct-laser system for seamless edge banding of furniture panels was developed in collaboration with woodworking machines maker IMA Klessmann GmbH (Lübbecke, Germany).


The laser system can operate in harsh workshop conditions, and provides high-power density on large treatment areas directly without the need for expensive and delicate optics. They can be scaled to any required size up to tens of kilowatts of heating power. Its many small heating zones can be independently activated and controlled, thereby enabling flexible optimization of heating profiles and generating structured heating patterns.

The system was introduced at the LIGNA 2015 woodworking tradeshow, held May 11-15 in Hannover, Germany.
