Industrial Laser Solutions' take:

Concept Laser president and CEO Frank Herzog has been selected as a finalist of the German Future Prize 2015, with a Federal President’s Award for Innovation and Technology nomination for the company's metal 3D printing process.

The metal 3D printing process, called LaserCUSING, involves a fusing process in which 3D CAD data is then used for 3D printing. It creates mechanical, thermally stable 3D-printed pieces used with stainless and tool steel, aluminum and titanium alloys, nickel-based superalloys, cobalt-chromium alloys, and gold and silver alloys.

A recent project, titled "3D Printing in Civil Aircraft Manufacturing – a Production Revolution is Taking Off," had earned Herzog the nomination. The project involved a titanium component that was 3D-printed and meant to serve as a bracket on an Airbus A350 XWB aircraft. Using the LaserCUSING process created a bracket that weighs 30% less than one created using traditional milling.
