Schaumburg, IL—Tests show that a combination of metal-shielded gas (MSG) and laser beams has much higher tolerance compatibility and a considerably reduced cost per piece part compared to conventional laser welding. Welding speeds higher than arc processes, even on thick plate, and reduced production time are other economic factors.

This potential also creates a challenge for sellers of arc welding technology. Close cooperation with research institutes that have technology expertise and manufacturers of welding technology is one condition for success.

Carl Cloos Schweisstechnik GmbH (Haiger, Germany) together with the Schweisstechnische Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt (SLV—Halle, Germany) have a joint research project to investigate the interface of components required for laser beam hybrid welding to create a user-friendly operating system.

Already developed is a modular hybrid welding head that adapts to any laser optics so that existing laser welding stations can be retrofit. An external axis allows the welding head access to any component part to be welded. And the welding head has a shroud for reliable gas shielding and efficient fume extraction.
