Laser cutter speeds up production of parts for race cars

Racing- and sports-car builder Ginetta is working with full-service sheet metalwork manufacturer Malton Laser.

GARFORTH, LEEDS, WEST YORKSHIRE and MALTON, NORTH YORKSHIRE, ENGLAND – Racing- and sports-car builder Ginetta is working with full-service sheet metalwork manufacturer Malton Laser, a partnership in which Malton Laser will supply Ginetta with laser-cut custom components that form part of its G40 and G55 sports cars.

Founded in 1958, Ginetta's hand-built road and race cars are produced in a 75,000-sq-ft. factory just outside of Leeds. With many components hand-crafted on site, Ginetta the company engineering and manufacturing talent to bring to life the Ginetta G40, Ginetta G55, and Ginetta G57 cars.

As a preferred supplier to Ginetta, Malton Laser was selected to produce more than 900 laser-cut plates to form part of the structure of its G55 GT4 (FIGURE) and G55 GT3 race cars, which compete throughout the summer months in various championships. Malton also created kits of parts to assist the vehicle's revised suspension systems, all assembled by their expert fabrication team.

Ginetta started working with Malton Laser in 2007 and regularly tasks the metalwork specialist with manufacturing a range of parts for its race cars, the majority of which are laser-cut using a Bystronic ByStar 3015 6kW fiber laser machine that is up to three times faster than a standard CO2 laser cutting system, without compromising on the quality of the finished product.

"We have a long-standing relationship with Ginetta and have worked on numerous projects over the years to meet with its metalwork requirements," says Charles Corner, managing director of Malton Laser. "As a racing enthusiast myself, working on the projects for Ginetta allows me to combine work with my favorite hobby, which is great."
