Nottingham, England—Sherwood Technology is a company specializing in color change science, with products that include additives, inks and packaging materials for commercial applications.

The company's chemists have developed laser code-able additives, inks and labels for many applications, in particular variable information printing. Systems are available for use in plastic, foodstuffs (pharmaceutical and confectionary), labels and inks for flexible packaging, foils, carton board and corrugate printing. The additive technology requires a low-power CO2 laser to create the required code.

Laserscribe thermoplastics additives provide high-contrast, thermally resistant (at injection/blow molding temperatures) marking of an expanded range of polymers. Laserscribe labels react to form a black image when exposed to a CO2 laser beam. Laserscribe edible compositions are used for surface marking tablets, pills and confectionaries, when exposed to CO2 laser light. Laserscribe inks, which can be applied by flexo, gravure or screen-printing, also react to CO2 light to form a black image with a long shelf life. Laserscribe metal marking additives provide a high contrast mark on metal surfaces, which can be imaged on the fly for high-speed production lines.

Sherwood has a number of patents covering its technology. And this technology has been extensively tested for pharmaceutical and food packaging applications.
