Santa Clara, CA—Consolidation goes on in the industrial laser community, perhaps driven by the prolonged downturn during which aggressive companies are positioning themselves for the expected recovery this year. Coherent Inc. is one of the companies that have been busy acquiring the pieces that will enable it to be a formidable competitor. The company's most recent move is the acquisition of Positive Light Inc. (Los Gatos, CA).

Positive Light, which designs and manufactures advanced solid-state pulsed lasers, has delivered laser systems to semiconductor manufacturers and other industrial customers. Commenting on the transaction, scheduled for completion last month, John Ambroseo, president and CEO of Coherent says, "[This] fits well into Coherent's goal of providing cutting-edge solutions to the photonics marketplace."

Positive Light will continue under present management in its Los Gatos facility.
