The relationship between the kinetic energy of the atoms and tetrahedral (sp3) diamond-like carbon content is shown by plotting the sp3-content and optical energy bandgap of PLD grown ta-C films as a function of on-target laser energy fluence. The sp3 content of the PLD grown ta-C films is determined by means of electron-energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS). The maximum sp3 content of 85 % is obtained at fluences in the range of 10 to 20 J/cm2.
