Professor John Girkin, FInstP, FOSA

Director of the Centre for Advanced Instrumentation

John Girkin PhD is Professor of Biophysics and Director of the Biophysical Sciences Institute at Durham University. His book A Practical Guide to Optical Microscopy will be out in the summer of 2019. Dr. Girkin began his career in industry, designing the world’s first commercial diode pumped Nd:YAG laser, and later researching and designing ophthalmic instrumentation including a diode laser for retinal photocoagulation. His research—which is strongly multi-disciplinary and collaborative—centers on development of advanced photonics and optical technologies, and their application to challenges within life sciences. Advanced optical microscopy methods are a strong focus, including confocal and multiphoton deep optical sectioning microscopy and application to such areas as brain research and early detection of dental decay (see Durham’s Center For Advanced Instrumentation web pages).
