Irvine, CA, January 29, 2004. Newport has announced the intention to enter the spectroscopy and applied spectroscopy markets by launching the OSM Series of turnkey spectrometers, light sources and fiber based accessories. These feature-rich instruments incorporate multi-element detector arrays, optional fiber coupling and battery-operated portability, as well as a choice of detectors and gratings covering the UV through near IR.

Higher end, self-contained models provide innovative options such as on-board 12-bit processing for data acquisition and real-time data analysis, on-board memory and removable SmartMedia memory cards for data storage and transport, simple touch screen control, and network connectivity via an optional Ethernet port. The OSM series is targeted at demanding laboratory research applications, process monitoring and QC labs, as well as OEM system-integrators.

Ron Hartmayer, Director of Marketing for Photonics Products, notes that, "Spectroscopic instrumentation is an obvious and natural progression for Newport on several fronts. First, we have long been supporting this market at the component level with both optics and high performance opto-mechanical assemblies. Second, all the core technologies deployed in these instruments are already strongly represented at Newport. Lastly, Newport has a history of supporting growing markets with value-added, integrated solutions that simplify the implementation of disparate photonic components. We certainly believe that spectroscopy and applied spectroscopy are markets with tremendous growth potential."

Hartmayer lists an extensive range of applications that the company intends to actively support. These include basic chemistry and biochemistry, biology and biomedicine, semiconductor research and fabrication, pharma, astronomy, agricultural products and food processing, and education.
