October 18, 2006, San Jose, CA--Avago Technologies is introducing "the industry's smallest red, green and blue (RGB) digital color sensor" for use in a variety of portable electronic applications. The ADJD-S312-CR999 color sensor is so small at 3 mm by 3 mm that 16 of them can fit on one key of a typical computer keyboard. The compact package paves the way for designers to develop smaller portable electronic devices that require color detection and measurement capabilities, according to Avago.
The device is intended for use in a wide variety of color sensing applications in conjunction with a white LED for reflective color measurement. Typical applications include portable electronic laboratory instruments, industrial test equipment, and portable color readers. The small size also enables use of the color sensor in portable consumer devices such as mobile phones, PDAs, and hand-held games.
The color sensor provides the necessary circuitry to directly interface with a microcontroller using a conventional two-wire serial interface. To facilitate evaluation and and design-in of the color sensor, Avago also offers a complete "plug and play" development kit that interfaces to a personal computer through a USB port.
